School Daze

Summer is in swing and we hope you are having fun times! Principals are doing some summer cleaning, sorting, and planning for the new school year.

This coming year we plan to have a parent and tot class once a month with Ellen Salley. Thanks, Ellen, for coming back to us once again! If you are interested in this new class, just let us know. It will be one hour long and will be a great introduction to Religious School, and it will surely be a fun time!

Parents, you will be receiving your registration mate-rials later this month. Go ahead, fill them out, and send them in. We are no longer asking for that $25 deposit which often led to confusion in totaling fees. We always ask for total payment by the first day of school unless prior arrangements have been made with Joyce in the office. Thanks!

We will see you on our first day of school, September 16th at 10:00. We’ll enjoy a light break-fast with everyone to start our day. Don’t worry, we will be reminding you again!!

President’s Message

I would like to thank my immediate predecessors, Jim Gesmer and Brina Grigg, as wonderful mentors and committed members of our congregation; and I would like to thank the board of directors and all members for choosing me to help lead the Temple as we start to implement some of the strategic planning goals identified last year.

A friend of mine is probably the world’s third largest producer of garlic just behind South Korea (at least it seems that way from what she gets out of her small plots). One of the byproducts of growing garlic is the scape that long green stem that shows about three to four months before you can harvest the actual garlic bulbs. She recently left me another batch of these scapes, and I had to wonder what to do with four pounds of what most people might otherwise discard or compost. Somewhere in there is a moral or an analogy of using what you have and not wasting anything.

As the board began looking at options for the various projects, needing to be done it was immediately obvious that the roof and HVAC repairs were the most critical. While the other projects might appear more appealing (modernizing the sanctuary, updating the kitchen, expanding the memorial alcove, or even repair-ing the parking lot – OK maybe the last one isn’t as appealing but certainly more visible than the roof or even the HVAC equipment.

Over the next couple of months a committee will be working on establishing a capital campaign to raise the monies to accomplish all or most of these goals, but in the process one of the areas that has been highlighted is that our building fund, the Bud Schaider Building Fund, is woefully in need of some help. I would like think of the building fund as the scapes of the cam-paign. While we will get to our goals (and make some garlic, if you’re following the analogy), it would be nice to have some scapes to rely on until we get to the actual garlic. So, if you’re looking for a place to make additional donations for weddings, births, B’nai Mitzvot, or something else please consider donating to the Temple’s building fund. The building will thank you, and the next generation of members will thank you, too.

One thing is for sure over the next couple of months and years: we are in store for some wonderful changes and developments. Enjoy the journey!

By the way, in case you’re curious: garlic scapes make a wonderful pesto – with or without basil, beans, or oth-er additions (I prefer basil and sunflower seeds rather than pine nuts). The Two Wise Men of American Reform Judaism

By every account, Stephen Samuel Wise was a giant in American Judaism. Born in Budapest in 1874, Wise came to this country with his family when he was seventeen months old. The son and grandson of rabbis, Wise decided at an early age to continue the family’s rabbinic legacy. However, Wise differed from his forebears; because of his secular education and American upbringing, Wise forsook their traditional approach and embraced religious liberalism.

After obtaining his undergraduate degree at Columbia in 1892, Stephen planned to begin doctoral studies at Columbia in the field of Semitics. He wanted to pursue rabbinic training but did not want to interrupt his doctoral studies. So, with the typical boldness that he showed throughout his life, Stephen wrote to the elderly and by then legendary Isaac Mayer Wise (no relation) in August 1892, seeking permission to enter the rabbinic program at HUC in absentia.

Though Stephen’s original letter has been lost, the elder Wise’s response is on file at the American Jewish Archives and is the only known correspondence between the two founders of today’s Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. In his handwritten letter dated September 4, 1892, Isaac M. Wise reluctantly agreed to Stephen Wise’s request but stated,

My private opinion, however, is that it would be much better for you if you would reverse the order [of your studies] to get permission from Columbia to make your post-graduate studies for the degree you seek “in absentia” and come here [Cincinnati] to make your rabbinical studies regularly. You can not do the amount of work in “Rabbinica” by private tuition which you can do here. Your main object however is the “Rabbinica” which I think should now occupy your main attention, and the work for the Dr. Ph. [Ph.D.] as any other degree be done simultaneously. But as your father seems to think otherwise and your taste runs in the same direction, I submit and registered you in absentia for the year any how.

The upshot of this was that Stephen did not follow through on what he himself had proposed. After consulting his father, rather than beginning either course of study he immediately went to Europe, where he soon received private ordination from Adolf Jellinek, a liberal rabbi in Vienna. When Stephen returned to New York in the spring of 1893, he became assistant rabbi at Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, largely due to his father’s influence. He then also began his doctoral studies at Columbia, where he received his degree in 1901.

It is unfortunate there is no further record of this episode from either side. It would be fascinating to learn Stephen Wise’s reasons for not pursuing his studies at HUC or to know Isaac Mayer Wise’s reaction both to the young man’s brash proposal and his sudden change of plans.
