Religious School

School Daze

Summer is in swing and we hope you are having fun times! Principals are doing some summer cleaning, sorting, and planning for the new school year.

This coming year we plan to have a parent and tot class once a month with Ellen Salley. Thanks, Ellen, for coming back to us once again! If you are interested in this new class, just let us know. It will be one hour long and will be a great introduction to Religious School, and it will surely be a fun time!

Parents, you will be receiving your registration mate-rials later this month. Go ahead, fill them out, and send them in. We are no longer asking for that $25 deposit which often led to confusion in totaling fees. We always ask for total payment by the first day of school unless prior arrangements have been made with Joyce in the office. Thanks!

We will see you on our first day of school, September 16th at 10:00. We’ll enjoy a light break-fast with everyone to start our day. Don’t worry, we will be reminding you again!!

Till next time, Shalom.

President’s Message

I would like to thank my immediate predecessors, Jim Gesmer and Brina Grigg, as wonderful mentors and committed members of our congregation; and I would like to thank the board of directors and all members for choosing me to help lead the Temple as we start to implement some of the strategic planning goals identified last year.

A friend of mine is probably the world’s third largest producer of garlic just behind South Korea (at least it seems that way from what she gets out of her small plots). One of the byproducts of growing garlic is the scape that long green stem that shows about three to four months before you can harvest the actual garlic bulbs. She recently left me another batch of these scapes, and I had to wonder what to do with four pounds of what most people might otherwise discard or compost. Somewhere in there is a moral or an analogy of using what you have and not wasting anything.

As the board began looking at options for the various projects, needing to be done it was immediately obvious that the roof and HVAC repairs were the most critical. While the other projects might appear more appealing (modernizing the sanctuary, updating the kitchen, expanding the memorial alcove, or even repair-ing the parking lot – OK maybe the last one isn’t as appealing but certainly more visible than the roof or even the HVAC equipment.

Over the next couple of months a committee will be working on establishing a capital campaign to raise the monies to accomplish all or most of these goals, but in the process one of the areas that has been highlighted is that our building fund, the Bud Schaider Building Fund, is woefully in need of some help. I would like think of the building fund as the scapes of the cam-paign. While we will get to our goals (and make some garlic, if you’re following the analogy), it would be nice to have some scapes to rely on until we get to the actual garlic. So, if you’re looking for a place to make additional donations for weddings, births, B’nai Mitzvot, or something else please consider donating to the Temple’s building fund. The building will thank you, and the next generation of members will thank you, too.

One thing is for sure over the next couple of months and years: we are in store for some wonderful changes and developments. Enjoy the journey!

By the way, in case you’re curious: garlic scapes make a wonderful pesto – with or without basil, beans, or oth-er additions (I prefer basil and sunflower seeds rather than pine nuts). And four pounds of scapes work out to about two quarts of pesto. Imagine what we can do with a well-funded building fund!

The Two Wise Men of American Reform Judaism

By every account, Stephen Samuel Wise was a giant in American Judaism. Born in Budapest in 1874, Wise came to this country with his family when he was seventeen months old. The son and grandson of rabbis, Wise decided at an early age to continue the family’s rabbinic legacy. However, Wise differed from his forebears; because of his secular education and American upbringing, Wise forsook their traditional approach and embraced religious liberalism.

The Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati seemed the logical choice for a young man seeking a liberal rabbinic education in the early 1890s. After obtaining his undergraduate degree at Columbia in 1892, Stephen planned to begin doctoral studies at Columbia in the field of Semitics. He wanted to pursue rabbinic training but did not want to interrupt his doctoral studies. So, with the typical boldness that he showed throughout his life, Stephen wrote to the elderly and by then legendary Isaac Mayer Wise (no relation) in August 1892, seeking permission to enter the rabbinic program at HUC in absentia.

Though Stephen’s original letter has been lost, the elder Wise’s response is on file at the American Jewish Archives and is the only known correspondence between the two founders of today’s Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. In his handwritten letter dated September 4, 1892, Isaac M. Wise reluctantly agreed to Stephen Wise’s request but stated,

My private opinion, however, is that it would be much better for you if you would reverse the order [of your studies] to get permission from Columbia to make your post-graduate studies for the degree you seek “in absentia” and come here [Cincinnati] to make your rabbinical studies regularly. You can not do the amount of work in “Rabbinica” by private tuition which you can do here. Your main object however is the “Rabbinica” which I think should now occupy your main attention, and the work for the Dr. Ph. [Ph.D.] as any other degree be done simultaneously. But as your father seems to think otherwise and your taste runs in the same direction, I submit and registered you in absentia for the year any how.

The upshot of this was that Stephen did not follow through on what he himself had proposed. After consulting his father, rather than beginning either course of study he immediately went to Europe, where he soon received private ordination from Adolf Jellinek, a liberal rabbi in Vienna. When Stephen returned to New York in the spring of 1893, he became assistant rabbi at Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, largely due to his father’s influence. He then also began his doctoral studies at Columbia, where he received his degree in 1901.

It is unfortunate there is no further record of this episode from either side. It would be fascinating to learn Stephen Wise’s reasons for not pursuing his studies at HUC or to know Isaac Mayer Wise’s reaction both to the young man’s brash proposal and his sudden change of plans. It is no secret that Stephen harbored a general resentment against the Hebrew Union College, particularly for what he called a “deep-seated intolerance of Zionist advocacy” among HUC faculty and administration in its early years. 比特币赌博 He also considered that New York far surpassed Cincinnati as the center of American Jewish life.

Writing in his autobiography about his 1922 decision to found his own rabbinic seminary, the Jewish Institute of Religion, Wise stated, “Cincinnati…had somehow ceased to be the large and vital Jewish center it had been in the earliest days of its great founder, Isaac M. Wise…With the passing of Isaac Wise, Cincinnati’s glory had largely departed. Only immovable buildings and local piety or patriotism had kept the college in Cincinnati.”

Criticizing also the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, the Conservative rabbinic seminary located in New York, Wise said that “both alike seemed to us committed to an un-catholic sectarianism, which in both cases seemed survival of yesterday rather than prophecy of tomorrow. Wherefore, the founding of the Jewish Institute of Religion, in a community that was itself a Jewish cosmos.”

People’s opinions of Wise’s comments directed at HUC, JTS and the city of Cincinnati depend on their location, both political and geographic. With Wise as its president, the JIR operated for more than twenty-five years and welcomed a diverse mixture of students and scholars. The Jewish Institute of Religion purposely reflected the changing demography of the American Jewish community, which resulted from the massive influx of East European immigrants in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In 1950, HUC and JIR merged. Thus the two Wises, different as they were and interacting only once that we know about, are forever entwined in American Reform Jewish history.

Lure angling 101: 5 Tips That Will Transform You Into A Pro

So you believe you’re an excellent fisherman? Well, we’re below to inform you that you aren’t fishing to your full capacity.

Bait fishing is the very best means to attract those big wheel and also placed a laugh on their faces when they bite down on your line.

In this post we’ll cover 5 ideas that will certainly make you a pro when it comes to lure fishing. So without additional ado, let’s just get straight right into it, shall we?

Tip # 1: The Right Lure Is Whatever When You’re Bait Angling

THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF BAITS FOR BAIT ANGLING:

1. All-natural

2. Artificial

Natural lure is the kind you locate in the wild. Think insects, fish, eels, and so on

. Artificial bait is anything male made that produces an aroma or noise. Examples include flies, lures, etc

. Synthetic lure is not as reliable as natural lure when fishing. But it’s still better than nothing which’s why we’re gon na direct it bent on you in this checklist of tips for lure angling. So transform your artificial lure right into a natural one by using fragrances to attract fish.

Always utilize 2 sort of bait when angling for additional efficiency. Similar to various other kinds of angling, the fish won’t just attack any kind of random thing that hits its nose. They’ll just bite if something stimulates their passion as well as makes them think that it’s food.

Idea # 2: Your Lure Hook Should Be Concealing Your Lure

The fish are always seeking lure. And when they have actually found it, they’ll begin to munch on it. So in order to attract them, you have to make sure that your lure hook is hidden by the lure.

A great deal of fishermens fail at this point. They’ll simply plonk down their hook as well as hope that the fish will certainly attack on it. That’s not exactly how it works. The fish will certainly nibble on the lure yet they won’t constantly choose of attacking on the hook or not.Choose the best spincast reel for hold stronger

If your bait hook is exposed, the fish will simply ignore it completely. So you need to see to it that your bait hook is hidden from sight as well as you’ll have to angle it in such a way that makes it much less noticeable in front of the bait.

Pointer # 3: Make Your Lure Look All-natural

The same selects man-made lure. You require to make it look natural. Or else, the fish will not be interested to nibble at it. So consider tying your fly on a little drum head or making a tiny tube out of aluminum foil and also plonk it responsible while still in its packaging.

Just cut a large hole in it and also see to it that the deal with is concealed from sight while you’re fishing. By doing this, the fish will have no concept that you’re not using a natural lure as well as they’ll definitely want chewing down on it.

Pointer # 4: Bait Fishing Is A Waiting Game

If you’re fishing with natural lure, after that you’ll need to await the fish to nibble on your hook or your bait. They do not come by every second of the day. In this situation, you’ll need to await the fish to find by every now and then and munch on your lure.

This is why artificial lure is much better when you’re lure fishing. The fabricated bait is developed as though it’s more noticeable than the natural baits, so the fish will certainly see it as well as be drawn in to attack on it. As well as they’ll do this when it’s a suitable time for them.

You simply have to await your fish to munch at it and after that you’ll need to reel them in. As well as when you do this, make certain that your bait hook is hidden from sight, as we mentioned in pointer # 2. So make certain that it’s all in location properly before you start reeling the fish in.

Suggestion # 5: Use Your Line Appropriately

When you’re fishing for artificial lure, this suggestion doesn’t apply as much as it would certainly if you were making use of all-natural bait. Nonetheless, you still need to utilize your line properly. Or else, it’ll break or you might ruin your angling technique.

SO IN ORDER TO SEE TO IT THAT YOU DON’T DO ANYTHING THAT’LL MAKE YOUR FISHING UNSUCCESSFUL, Take Note Of THE FOLLOWING:

1. Match Your Bait Design To Your Fishing Strategy: Certainly, this is one of the most important idea. It’s like saying there are 2 kinds of bait angling– one where you do not need to stress over anything and the other where every detail matters.

2. Don’t Use A Reel That’s Also Weak For Your Lure: The angling reels are like the hammers of bait fishing. If you utilize a weak one, then it’ll damage or jam right at the moment you require it the most. So see to it that you’re utilizing a solid fishing reel for your synthetic bait.

In Summary

As you possibly know by now, it’s not almost the bait that you’re fishing for. If you stop working to make certain that your method is right, after that even the most effective lures won’t aid you.

So take care when you’re fishing and make certain that your lure is properly utilized.
